Emilio Gabaglio

President of Forum Lavoro of the Partito Democratico; former General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC)

Born in Como in 1937, Emilio Gabaglio graduated with a Degree in economics from the University of Milan. He works as a high school teacher and municipal councillor in Como and later as national officer and then president of the Christian Association of Italian Workers (ACLI).

Between 1974 and 1982 he is Director of international affairs at the Confederazione Italiana Sindacati Lavoratori (CISL) and in 1979 becomes member of the ETUC executive committee. In 1991 he is elected ETUC general secretary, a position in which he is reelected in 1995 and 1999. Between 2006 and 2008 he is European affairs counselor for the Italian minister of labour.
