Gesine Schwan

Former President of the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance, Berlin; former presidential candidate of the Federal Republic of Germany

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Gesine Schwan is former President of the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance in Berlin and former presidential candidate of the Federal Republic of Germany.

She studied history, philosophy, political science and Romance studies at the Universität Freiburg and the Freie Universität Berlin where she was also awarded her doctorate in 1970 and earned her post-doctorate in 1974.

Professor Schwan researched and lectured at the Otto-Suhr Institute at the Freie Universität in Berlin between 1977 and 1999. She also taught in Washington, Cambridge and New York, among others. From 2010 - 2014, she was President of the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance.

Professor Schwan stood as the SPD and Green/Bündnis 90 candidate in the 2004 German presidential election and was only narrowly defeated. She was nominated as the SPD presidential candidate again in May 2008. She was also the Coordinator of German-Polish Intersocietal and Cross-Border Cooperation from January 2005 to September 2009.
