Xavier Prats Monné
Director-General for Education and Culture at the European Commission
Xavier Prats Monné is the Director-General for Education and Culture at the European Commission. The main policy areas under his responsibility are the modernisation of European education and training systems; mobility policies and programmes, including Erasmus for students, lifelong learning; the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT); and international relations in the field of education, culture and youth.
From mid-2007 till the end of 2010, he was the Director for employment policy, Europe 2020 strategy and international relations in the field of employment. He previously served as Director for the European Social Fund, as Deputy Chief of Staff of the European Commission Vice President for external relations, and as Advisor of the Commissioner for Regional policy.
From 2007 to end-2010, he was one of the 5 founding members of the European Commission's Impact Assessment Board, which vets all impact assessments produced by the institution and reports directly to the President of the European Commission President.
He holds degrees in Social Anthropology from the Central University of Madrid, in Development Economics from the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies in France, and in European Affairs from the College of Europe in Belgium, where he graduated first of the Class of 1981-82 and served as assistant professor.
