Citizens' advisory group in Essen
On 30 November 2013 a group of randomly selected citizens met in Essen, Germany, for a Citizens' Advisory Group meeting in the context of the New Pact for Europe (NPE) project. During an entire day, 27 citizens living in or around Essen had a thorough exchange about the perspectives for the future of Europe on the basis of the five strategic options presented and discussed in the first NPE report.
At the end of the day, a majority of citizens opted for a further deepening of European integration arguing that EU Member States need to further integrate if they want not 'only' to overcome the current crisis but tackle the many internal and external challenges ahead. These challenges cannot – according to participants of the event – be mastered if the EU puts in the reverse gear and moves in the direction of 'less Europe'.
