Policy makers debate in London
On January 20th Policy Network hosted a private roundtable and a public event to discuss the New Pact for Europe’s second report. The events marked the UK launch of the report. They were held in Westminster (London).
The roundtable event was attended by approximativelly 20 experts of EU affairs coming from policy-making, academic, media and think tank spheres. Most participants acknowledged the crisis of legitimacy faced by the EU, and the risk of political fragmentation, but they insisted on the need to take the broader crisis of political trust into account.
There was some scepticism on the possibility to return to a “win-win” situation by the means of a new “grand bargain” while visions of and expectations from the EU were very different from a country to another. Nevertheless, the “spirit” of the New Pact for Europe was said to be helpful and it should inspire policy-makers for the years to come despite huge political barriers, for instance on the Energy Union.
