Policy makers debate in Paris
On 5 February, Paris-based EuropaNova hosted a policy maker debate “Towards the New Pact for Europe”. Politicians, journalists and diplomats reflected on the current state of the Union after an opening speech by Maria João Rodrigues, a member of the Reflection Group of the New Pact for Europe project.
Fragmentation and euroscepticism were seen as the main threats that EU is facing today. The participants agreed that closer economic coordination is inevitable yet the EU needs to overcome distrust among member states in the first place.
Participants also discussed about the security challenges that Europe needs to address. They suggested that cooperation and investment in this field would add a security dimension to European identity and increase citizens' trust in the EU.
