Member of the European Parliament, Group of the European Conservatives and Reformists; former Minister of Justice of Romania
Monica Macovei is a member of the European Parliament in the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, elected in Romania in 2009 and 2014. She served as Romania’s Minister of Justice from 2005 to 2007, and received international recognition and awards for her anti-corruption initiatives and justice reforms that allowed Romania to enter the European Union. In 2014 she ran as an independent candidate in Romania's presidential elections.
In the European Parliament, she is the Head of Delegation to the EU-Albania Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee, member in the Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT), and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).
She was a legal expert for the Council of Europe and other international organizations, has successfully represented applicants before the European Court of Human Rights, and has published on human rights and judicial matters.
Ms. Macovei is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Central European University and of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience. She is also a member of the European Council on Foreign Relations as well as a founding member of Transparency International, Romanian Chapter, and other NGOs. In September 2012 she received the European Parliament "MEP 2012" award for her work in the field of justice and civil liberties.
